9 Common Paris Travel Scams and How to Avoid Them

Paris, the city of lights, romance, and…scams? Unfortunately, like any popular tourist destination, Paris attracts its share of con artists looking to take advantage of unsuspecting visitors. Don't let these scams ruin your trip! This guide will equip you with the knowledge you need to stay safe and protect your belongings while exploring the wonders of Paris.

1. The Snatch and Run

Leaving your phone on the table at an outdoor café is an open invitation for thieves. A quick bump, a grab, and they’re gone, often on a scooter. Be extra vigilant, especially on terrace seating, and keep your valuables close.

The same applies to purses and bags. Keep them securely on your lap or between your feet, and never leave them unattended.

2. The Gold Ring Trick

Someone "finds" a gold ring near you and asks if it’s yours. When you say no, they try to sell it to you, often claiming it's valuable. It's not. Just walk away and don't engage.

This is a classic distraction technique. While you're focused on the ring, an accomplice might be targeting your wallet or bag.

3. Fake Tickets

People outside metro stations or museums will offer "unused" tickets at a discount. These are almost always expired or fake. Buy tickets only from official vendors or machines.

This scam preys on tourists unfamiliar with the ticketing system. Don't be tempted by the lower price; it's a waste of money.

4. Inflated Prices at Shows

Be wary of overly friendly individuals offering premium seats and champagne at shows, especially in areas like Montmartre and the Moulin Rouge. These seemingly generous offers can lead to exorbitant bills.

Always confirm prices beforehand and be cautious of “deals” that seem too good to be true. Check the menu or program for listed prices.

5. The Friendship Bracelet Scam

Someone will try to tie a "friendship" bracelet around your wrist. Once it's on, they demand payment and it's difficult to remove. Be firm and avoid interacting with these vendors, especially around Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Montmartre.

This is a common tactic used to pressure tourists into paying for unwanted items. Be assertive and walk away.

6. The English Menu Markup

Some restaurants inflate prices on English menus. Ask for both the French and English menus to compare or use a translation app to check.

Also, be specific with your order to avoid being charged for extras you didn't request. Clearly state "un café" instead of just "coffee" to avoid receiving (and being charged for) a more expensive coffee.

7. Fake Taxis

Unlicensed taxis outside train stations and airports will often overcharge. Look for official taxi stands with the “Taxis” sign or use ride-hailing apps.

Legitimate taxis have a “taxi” light on the roof and a meter. Avoid anyone soliciting rides directly.

8. The "Lost Tourist" Distraction

Someone will ask for help with a map, distracting you while an accomplice picks your pocket. Be wary of anyone trying to get too close, especially in crowded areas.

Maintain awareness of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure, especially in crowded train stations and tourist hotspots.

9. Pickpockets

Pickpockets thrive in crowded areas like the metro and popular attractions. Keep your valuables in zipped pockets or a money belt worn under your clothing.

Be particularly vigilant during rush hour and in crowded tourist areas. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep your phone out of sight whenever possible.

Stay Safe and Enjoy Paris!

Paris is generally a safe city, but awareness is key. By being aware of these common scams and taking simple precautions, you can protect yourself and enjoy a worry-free trip. Don’t let the fear of scams overshadow the beauty and magic of Paris. Stay informed, stay alert, and have a wonderful time!
